i test drove a vw phaeton 2004. here are some pics:

Does anyone have any real life experience with these. This isn’t for me rather for my wife that just got a job closer to home. I figure trading in the Kia Rio for this would be a solid move. I know she would like it.

You should sell the Kia Rio separately for 1 years worth of maintenance funds.

Buy it and never look back! On a serious note, if you want to ask someone about it, ask Jagvar.

Well, it might seem like a solid purchase at first, but VW maintenance, especially on a car that is essentially an Audi A8 or Continental Flying Spur underneath, will be costly. I would recommend getting something more reliable, such as a Lexus LS430.

If you’re really dead set on this car, consult Jagvar on Oppo, he has one of these.

I thought this was a W engine. The VW’s are hard or expensive to work on is for the most part overblown. In general they are cake to work on. They do use upscale parts on occasion that cost a bit more, but there is almost always an alternative aftermarket part.

I’d browse through the list of common maintenance fixes and see if anything would piss you off. If its going to eat up most of your budget it might be a bit on the expensive side but i can’t think of anything this cheap with comparable equipment.

There is an owner on OPPO, Jagvar, and he does not daily drive it, because it is prohibitivly expensive to maintain, even the V8.

So what happened? You got it?

How many miles? If between 80K miles and 150K, check for timing belt being done.

Its NOT a W8, its a V8, same as A8L, S6, etc...

80% of the work can be done at an indie VW/Audi place

20% will be dealer only

Gas MPG is very low 17/20 but gas is cheap now

Phaetons are always close to a $2000 repair, and sometimes take time to find parts, if you have a backup car, it would be really good. Not because the Phaeton is unreliable (it isnt, I had 2) but parts can take time to come from Europe sometimes. The V8 engine is rock solid, but the car is 40% sensors and those can get wonky.

This car is awesome in long commutes and highway, for a small commute, it wouldn’t be my first recommendation.

I was thinking about getting it for my wife but she said she didn't like the idea of driving an old persons car. She doesn't get it. Oh well.
